When I
first thought of making a blog to record my sewing journey, I was going to use
‘kasewtudio’—Kayun’s Sewing Studio. I even already had my Instagram
account set up back in the end of January. But then when I was doing research
about seams.... and suddenly this phrase popped up in my head.
Immediately,
I looked up the phrase on Google. I even tried to look if somebody had already
claimed it as their own—probably for their brand. I tried to change my
Instagram handle from ‘kasewtudio’ to ‘seamsprettygood’—and voila:
nobody used that phrase as their Instagram handle. It’s like the ‘OMG’ moment
when you found out that not a lot of people have done what you thought it would
be such a mainstream thing to do.
And that’s
the story how the username was found.
Now, about the sewing itself.
It started
back in July when a classmate of mine tagged me on Facebook, on a post about
free sewing course by the local government (Balai Pelatihan Kerja—BLK). I
signed up right away, but unfortunately: I didn’t pass the test. Knowing the
result, I thought to myself that it’s okay, that my chance to learn how to use
sewing machine will probably come some day in the future (please note: I’d been
saying that to myself for more than a decade).
One day in
September, someone from BLK sent me a message on WhatsApp: “Are you still
interested in joining our sewing class?”
HELL, YES.
OF COURSE I AM.
I went
straight to BLK once I’d finished my assignment at work. Few days later, I did
the test and interview again (the interviewer: “Oh! Weren’t you in the previous
batch as well?”). Long story short, I passed the test and finally joined the
sewing class.
It felt
like my dream came true. Learning how to use the machine last year is one of my
“that’s unbelievable” stories. You probably can’t imagine how happy I
was, how fulfilled I was after finally able to touch and use the machine
I’d only be able to dream.
At first, my
objective joining that sewing class was just to learn how to use a sewing
machine. I wasn’t planning to learn how to make clothes because I kinda buried
the dream to make clothes long time ago. I even thought of dropping from the
class only on week two. But I changed my mind. There is nothing wrong learning
new things, one or two. It will be useful someday.
Here I am:
already making the fourth blouse and my second pair of pants after I made a
purchase of a sewing machine in November. I thought I’d only use the sewing
machine to make bags or dolls. But apparently the art of making clothes has
been distracting me from my original intention.
And I’m
gonna write everything related to my sewing journey here.
